Academic Planning and Institutional Research

A unit of the Office of The Provost.

APIR is the institutional research (IR) office for UW-Madison.  We provide analysis, data, and information resources related to the academic people (students, faculty, staff), programs (degrees, majors, certificates), and structures (schools/colleges, departments, centers and institutes).   Our focus is on data in the context of trends, peer comparisons, and combinations of data across disparate sources.  We provide information for decision-making and and policy development and review, and official data for internal and external audiences.

Examples include enrollment projections, student retention and graduation rates, faculty recruiting and retention analyses, comparative faculty and administrative salary comparisons, progress to degree measures, and student enrollment patterns.

We also support a range of academic planning activities, specifically in relation to the planning of new academic programs or structures, or substantial re-organizations, conducted within the context of the work of University Academic Planning Council  and faculty policy.  We support program review, assessment of student learning, and act as the liaison to the Higher Learning Commission.
