Academic Planning and Institutional Research

APIR is the institutional research (IR) office for UW-Madison and is a unit within the Office of The Provost.  We provide analytics for decision-making, policy development and review, and official data for internal and external audiences. We provide analytics and policy resources related to the:

  • academic people (students, faculty, staff)
  • programs (degrees, majors, certificates)
  • structures (schools/colleges, departments, centers/institutes)
  • curriculum (courses)

Examples of analytic activities include:

  • enrollment modeling and enrollment projections
  • student retention/graduation rates and time-to-degree
  • faculty recruiting, retention, turnover, and scholarly activity
  • faculty and administrative salary comparisons
  • curricular outcomes, including grading patterns
  • student enrollment patterns and outcomes by program

APIR is also the academic planning office for UW-Madison. We serve as the institutional liaison to the Higher Learning Commission for accreditation and support academic planning activities including:

  • approvals of new courses and course changes
  • staff support to the University Curriculum Committee (UCC) and the University Academic Planning Council (UAPC).
  • approvals of new academic programs and changes to existing programs
  • approvals of new academic structures or changes to existing structures (departments, course subjects)
  • program review
  • assessment of student learning
